Matcha is more than just green tea in Japan but a symbol of Japanese culture and tradition. It was first planted in China during the 12th century and introduced to Japan later. It can be enjoyed as a drink, dessert and healthy treat. Few know that it actually comes from the same plant with black tea. Yet, it has a sweeter flavor because of shading, a process in which farmers cover the tea plants for 20 to 30 days before the tea leaves are picked. The covering practice reduces the amount of sunlight the plants receive. Though the growth of tea plants is slowed down, it gives Matcha the richer taste and deeper green color.
More and more people are rediscovering Matcha in today's world of health. They have a cup of Matcha before work rather than coffee. With higher levels of nutrients, it increases energy levels and improves moods without the side effects of coffee.
