No other city in India or in any country has a unique system like this. The men who make it work are called dabbawallas. In Hindi, the word dabba refers to lunch box and walla means carrier or deliver man.The 5000 dabbawallas carry lunch boxes—about 200,000 meals per day—to offices and workplaces throughout the city by lunch time in Mumbai. Every day, for a very modest fee (only 300 rupees per month), the dabbawallas collect freshly cooked meals from their customers' home and deliver to the nearest train station by bicycle before 9:00 a.m.. At the train station, the dabbawallas sort through all the lunch boxes and put them onto trains that will bring them to the station nearest the customer's office. The lunch boxes are delivered to the offices by bike. Each person gets their home-cooked meal by 12:30. To satisfy their customers, they use a complicated system of collection teams, sorting points and delivery zones, and a entirely manual system for routing the right meal to the right direction. In spite of difficult tasks like this, the organization has been recognized and celebrated for their incredible order accuracy 99.9999 percent. Recently, the organization makes their effort to assist Mumbai's 200,000 slum by giving some of the food they deliver which is never eaten or barely touched. This idea indeed helps the poverty without too much cost.
